If you’ve ever asked an AI for something and received a generic, off-mark, or just plain confusing response, you’re not alone. We’ve all been there. The secret to unlocking the true potential of generative AI isn’t just about having a powerful tool—it’s about knowing how to talk to it.

Think of it this way: you wouldn’t ask a new intern to “do something about our social media” and expect a winning campaign. You’d provide context, goals, examples, and a clear direction. Your AI assistant is the same; it thrives on clear, thoughtful instruction. This process is called prompt engineering, and it’s the most critical skill in the AI-powered world.

Fortunately, you don’t need a degree in computer science to get great results. Leaders in the field, like Google, have developed simple yet powerful frameworks to guide us. One of the most effective and easy-to-remember is TCREI: Thoughtfully Create Really Excellent Inputs.

Let’s break down this framework and see how you can use it to consistently get the brilliant, useful outputs you’re looking for.

The TCREI Framework: Your Blueprint for Better AI Conversations

TCREI is an acronym that guides you through the essential components of a stellar prompt. Let’s walk through each step with a practical example. Imagine we’re using an AI to help us with a common business task: writing a marketing email.

T – Task: Define the Core Action

Start by being crystal clear about what you want the AI to do. The task is the verb, the central command. Avoid vagueness. Instead of “help with marketing,” specify the exact format and goal.

  • Weak Task: “Write about our new coffee blend.”
  • Excellent Task: “Write a marketing email announcing our new seasonal coffee blend, ‘Autumn Spice,’ to our existing customer list.”

Why it works: The AI now knows the format (email), the subject (new coffee blend), the specific name (Autumn Spice), and the audience (existing customers). This eliminates guesswork.

C – Context: Provide the Background Story

Context is the who, what, where, when, and why. It’s the information that allows the AI to tailor its response to your specific situation. Feed it the details you would give a human writer.

  • Adding Context: “Our company is ‘Artisan Bean Roasters,’ a premium, sustainable coffee brand with a friendly and expert tone. The blend features notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, and caramel. The goal of this email is to drive pre-orders for the blend, which launches next month.

Why it works: The AI now understands the brand’s voice (friendly expert), key product details to highlight (specific flavor notes), and the primary objective (pre-orders). This transforms a generic email into an on-brand communication.

R – Role: Assign a Persona

This is where the magic happens. You can dramatically improve output quality by asking the AI to embody a specific role or expert. You are essentially hiring a specialist for a fraction of a second.

  • Assigning a Role: “Write this email from the perspective of our Head Roaster, Maria. She is passionate about sourcing and flavor profiles.

Why it works: Instead of generating a bland corporate message, the AI will now craft a email that feels personal, authentic, and filled with the expertise of a master roaster. It might include a short anecdote about sourcing the beans or why the flavor profile works so well.

How to phrase it:
You can use various lead-ins to assign your role:

  • “Act as a [specific role]…”
  • “You are a [specific role]…”
  • “Write from the perspective of a [specific role]…”
  • “Adopt the persona of a [specific role]…”
  • “Channel the expertise of a [specific role]…”

E – Examples: Show, Don’t Just Tell

Examples are a powerful way to guide the AI on style, format, tone, or length. If you have a previous email that performed well or a specific structure you like, include it!

  • Giving an Example: “Please structure the email with a short, personal story at the beginning, followed by the key features and a clear call-to-action button for ‘Pre-Order Now.’ Use a tone similar to our previous email subject line: ‘You won’t believe what we just discovered…’

Why it works: The AI has a direct template to follow. It knows the preferred structure, the type of opener, and the exact phrasing for the CTA button, ensuring consistency with your other branding materials.

I – Iterate: Refine and Improve

Your first prompt is a starting point, not a finished product. The final step is to iterate. If something isn’t quite right, don’t scrap it—refine it. Ask for variations, specify changes, or provide additional constraints.

  • Iterating on the Output:
    • “That’s great, but make the subject line more urgent.”
    • “Can you shorten the intro story and add a bulleted list of the tasting notes?”
    • “Rewrite this for a audience that is new to our brand, not existing customers.”

Why it works: Iteration is a collaborative process. The AI learns from your feedback, allowing you to hone in on the perfect output through a simple conversation.

Putting It All Together: A TCREI Prompt in Action

Here’s what our complete, TCREI-powered prompt looks like:

Task: Write a marketing email announcing our new seasonal coffee blend, ‘Autumn Spice,’ to our existing customer list.

Context: Our company is ‘Artisan Bean Roasters,’ a premium, sustainable coffee brand with a friendly and expert tone. The blend features notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, and caramel. The goal is to drive pre-orders for the blend, which launches next month.

Role: Write this email from the perspective of our Head Roaster, Maria. She is passionate about sourcing and flavor profiles.

Examples: Please structure the email with a short, personal story at the beginning, followed by the key features and a clear call-to-action button for ‘Pre-Order Now.’ Use a tone similar to our previous email subject line: ‘You won’t believe what we just discovered…’

This prompt is no longer a simple question; it’s a comprehensive creative brief. It provides everything the AI needs to generate a high-quality, ready-to-use (or nearly ready-to-use) piece of content.

By taking an extra moment to Thoughtfully Create Really Excellent Inputs, you move from merely using AI to truly partnering with it. Happy prompting!

FAQ

Q1: Is the TCREI framework only for advanced users?

Not at all! TCREI is designed for everyone. While experienced prompt engineers might use it intuitively, beginners can use it as a handy checklist to ensure they’re providing enough information. Start by focusing on just Task and Context, and then gradually incorporate Role and Examples as you get more comfortable.

Q2: What if I don’t have an example to provide for the “E” step?

That’s perfectly fine. While examples are powerful, they are not always mandatory. You can often compensate with exceptionally clear Task and Context instructions. Alternatively, you can Iterate: generate a response yourself, then ask the AI to “Rewrite the above in the style of a [Desired Tone] blog post” or “Shorten this to a 100-word summary.” That output then becomes your example for the next prompt.

Q3: How long should a good prompt be?

A good prompt is as long as it needs to be and no longer. There is no strict word count. A simple fact-checking prompt might be one line, while a complex prompt for a marketing campaign could be several paragraphs. The TCREI framework ensures that every piece of information you add has a purpose, preventing unnecessary vagueness without encouraging bloated prompts.

Q4: I’ve used TCREI but I’m still not getting good results. What should I do?

First, double-check your Task instruction. Is it unambiguous? Second, examine your Context; you may need to add more background or constraints. Most often, the path to improvement is through Iteration (I). Use the AI’s flawed output as a learning tool. Ask yourself, “What was missing from my prompt that led to this error?” and refine your input accordingly. Prompting is a skill that improves with practice.
